The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, here featuring jazz musicians playing bass trombone, trumpet, tenor and alto saxophones, pianos, vibraphone, and drums, present three Schuller compositions from 1959 to 1962. Variants for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra states the theme in a 12-tone scale and then first piano, then bass, next vibraphone, and afterwards drum dominate the variations. The entire quartet ensues in the following variations and orchestra conclusion. The sonic landscape is essentially jagged and the various jazz instruments seem right at home within the orchestra.

The Gershwin concerto pitted the harsh brilliance of Grofe's jazz-band orchestration against Mr. Sherman's Lisztian grandeur of style. Each was a powerful expression taken separately, but together they gave a poignant illustration of Gershwin's frail and tenuous hold on the middle ground between two cultures. There is Gershwin at his most breathtaking in this work, but much of the music sits uneasily in the concerto's more formal dress. Like the concerto, the dance pieces included banjo and the usual battery of winds and brass, and what seemed occasionally errant and vulgar in the Gershwin was perfectly comfortable in this charming music. Throughout the six numbers - ''Coquette,'' ''My Blue Heaven,'' ''Dardanella,'' ''After You've Gone'' and ''Nobody's Sweetheart'' - ran one delicate sonority: the sound of muted brass.
