Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles is a 2014 compilation album distributed by The Numero Group. Pitchfork described the sound of the compilation as "mid-1970s American proto-metal" with groups who drew influence from bands such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath. The bands represented on the album were predominantly from middle America while the rest were from the southern United States.
Numero's latest compilation Warfaring Chronicles: Darkscorch Canticles is one of their broader investigations rather than a focused take on a interrelated scene or city – something they've done before with enjoyable results. The last is partially due to the fidelity – nearly everything here is classic on-a-shoestring when it comes to sound, but the murky live tracks on that first double album by Floyd seem almost to have been a raison d'etre. Meanwhile, with Zeppelin again providing an initial starting point, in all cases the specific lyrical themes all tend toward Tolkien (cited more than once – song titles include 'King Of The Golden Hall' and 'Song Of Sauron'), Robert E. Howard's Conan and medieval history real or feigned, usually with lots of blood, Satan and psychosis.

With Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles, the impacts of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on US shores and heartlands is revealed as a bludgeoning previously undescribed. In this collection, medieval Bonham thunk and febrile Iommi guitar leads crowd out the bluesy Americana that foregrounded those bands, replacing hippie pastoralism with mythology, armored conflict, sorcery, and doom. But Darkscorch Canticles hail from no simple aural landscape: Numero 048 melds amateur D&D artwork with stout chunks of stoner basement rock, grafting physical music artifacts into an imagined world. In both LP and CD formats, eye-crushing band logos dominate the cover in false pen ink, all of it ensconced in an embossed Wibalin weave, foil-stamped by licks from the fire-lake of Eldara.
