Natty Dread is the seventh studio album by Bob Marley and the Wailers, released in 1974. It was the first album released as Bob Marley and the Wailers instead of just the Wailers, the first recorded without Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, and the first recorded with I Threes, a female vocal trio consisting of Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt, and Marley's wife, Rita Marley.

It is considered one of the finest reggae records of all time, including timeless hits like "No Woman No Cry", "Lively Up Yourself", "Rebel Music", "Them Belly Full" and of course, "Natty Dread".

Eventually, however, Griffiths picked Gallimore Sutherland out of his pool of students, a youth the Gladiator had first met back during his masonry days, and the group were a trio again. As the '70s dawned, the Gladiators continued notching up hits, including "Freedom Train" and "Rock a Man Soul," both cut for Lloyd Daley, and "The Race" for Randy's. However, across the first half of the decade, it was Studio One that released the bulk of the trio's recordings. Classic followed classic, as the trio unleashed a stream of roots masterpieces. The album Father and Sons, released in 2005 on Ras/Sanctuary, finds Griffiths working with his sons, singer Al Griffiths and drummer Anthony Griffiths, and has been represented as Griffiths' farewell to his fans, with his sons taking over and continuing the Gladiators name in the future.

Natty Dread is Bob Marley's finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time. This was Marley's first album without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, and the first released as Bob Marley & the Wailers. The Wailers' rhythm section of bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and drummer Carlton "Carlie" Barrett remained in place and even contributed to the songwriting, while Marley added a female vocal trio, the I-Threes (which included his wife Rita Marley), and additional instrumentation to flesh out the sound.
