LISZT - BUSONI Liszt and Busoni Improvisations. In the days before phonograph records a popular method of spreading the melodies of well known operas was through the medium of the piano. Composers wrote fantasies or improvisations on the operatic score, which were then played in concert or sold through sheet music. I think it was Pete Welding writing in Down Beat a couple of years ago who said something to is mm, i h'riTr fi T r-i : ', V By DAVE WAGNER Bayou Country (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fantasy, 8387, stereo). Moby Grape '69 (Columbia CS 9696, stereo). THE CREEDENCE Clearwater Revival has its second hit, "Proud Mary," on the charts (first was "Susie Q"), and its second exceptionally well-done album, "Bayou Country.

This album alone insists that Ogdon should be added to the conversation. The opening Dante Sonata is top class and the Simone Boccanegra is sensational and exceeds Arrau's rendition. Ogdon plays the dark passages of the Funerailles superbly, and demonstrates he can easily tackle the lighter and quicker pieces such as the Concert Etudes with ease. Ogdon has more recordings of Liszt with EMI which include the Sonata in B Minor, the Polonaise No. 2, and a few other works not on this disc

Busoni: Piano Concerto. EMI Classics 94637246726 (EMI Classics prod. Recorded in 1967 (1989 digital remaster).

Liszt treats the dance form itself much less freely than he did much earlier with the verbunkos in the Hungarian Rhapsodies, and the material itself remains more specifically Hungarian than gypsy in thematic material. Their spare lines, angular rhythms and advanced harmonies show these pieces to be direct ancestors of the compositions of Béla Bartók One potential pitfall in discussing these works is labeling them as atonal on the basis of hearing strange. Ogdon, John, "Solo Piano Music (1861-86)". Walker, Alan, "Liszt and the Twentieth Century". Walker, Alan, Franz Liszt, Volume 3: The Final Years, 1861-1886 (New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1996). Ballade No. 1. 2.
